How to Care for the Navel in a Newborn Child?

Before talking about care and its importance, I would like to explain what the umbilical cord is, so that it is understood why we attach so much importance to it.
During pregnancy, an organ called the placenta forms in the mother’s uterus, which provides the baby with oxygen and nutrients. From the placenta to the baby, these nutrients and oxygen are carried by a structure called the umbilical cord, which consists of 2 arteries and 1 vein.

Navel care for newborn babies is important and should be done with the right methods. What you need to know about navel care:

  1. Do not soak until the umbilical cord falls off: Your baby’s umbilical cord falls off within two weeks after birth. During this period, take care to keep the umbilical cord dry. You should not bathe your baby in the bathtub and wet the umbilical area during this period.
  2. Keep the Umbilical Cord Clean: You can use warm water and cotton wool to clean around the umbilical cord. Continue cleaning your baby after the umbilical cord falls off.
  3. Watch out for signs of infection: If you notice symptoms such as inflammation around the navel, redness, swelling in the abdomen or bad odor in the navel, be sure to consult your doctor.
  4. Avoid traumatizing the umbilical cord: Clothes should be non-damaging. Diapers should either be folded or diapers with umbilical pockets should be used, and the umbilical cord should not remain in the diaper.

Above all, pay attention to your doctor’s recommendations and follow his/her instructions. After all, every baby is special.
